WCC Beth’s Big Badge Hunt
Ven-Top
Well that was fun!! I’d hazard a guess that 40 or so Wobblers took to the mean mountain road up Ven-Top this morning (according to the list on the ride) although CA says 71!!
I think everyone knew this was going to be a tough course before we started (apart from Andy perhaps!) It’s not a popular road amongst Zwifters as it’s a permanent feast of up, up, and a bit more up for good measure. There’s very little relief at all where you can have a good stretch of the knees and can feel like a real grind at times. This is why we chose this one for our monthly banded ride, we all have to put a considerable amount of effort up but the company and general chit chat helps distract from the boredom 🤣
The band worked beautifully today for most although there were a couple of hiccups. Poor Lewis had to take his daughter to the station thereby missing the start and being left alone in the pen til he got back 🤦♀️ Secondly, Donna C hadnt set the gears up properly on her Zwift controllers and therefore was stuck in one gear. She called time after a while but gave it a good crack nonetheless. Steve couldn’t work out why, no matter how hard he pushed, he just couldn’t pass anyone. It was only after fellow Mini-Egg Andrea dropped behind him that we discovered his brakes were stuck on. After a bit of googling we advised Steve to disconnect his Zwift controller so the brakes came off. Thankfully this worked and so Steve’s ride got considerably better. Andrea decided shortly after, similarly to Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand, enough was enough. Top work for getting that far Andrea, it’s a nasty route!
Coffee stops were a little hit and miss too so a few strategic slows of the group were required to haul back any riders who had lost the rubber band. Honestly, the group were wonderful and we all worked so well together to remain tight and get to the top as one unit.
We had a quiz about France to distract and Charl had some jokes and facts to keep us entertained.
A special mention has to go to Andy Thorn. This was his first ever group ride on Zwift and I’m not sure he really knew what he was getting himself into. Credit where credit is due, Andy stayed with us for the entire ride and got that elusive badge that plenty of far more experienced Zwifters still don’t have. Chapeau Andy.
The next banded badge hunt will be on Saturday 30th November folks. We will put details out once we’ve decided on a route. Please do come along though, it’s so much more fun with more folk along for the ride.
Until then…Wobble on!
